The Research Group

Underpinning the physical work in the garden is an active research programme, primarily focused on the Luton Hoo Estate in the 20th Century. Within the group members prepare to provide the much-loved historic tours that complement visits to the Walled Garden.  Each year the tour is reviewed and updated to bring it in line  with the most current research undertaken by the group.

In conjunction with this work the group also deliver a variety of subject specific talks, zoom talks, talks and tours, historic walks, visiting talks, in house talks and study days.  Members of the Research Group also take our talks out to deliver to groups, clubs and societies on a variety of subjects.  Research is constantly updated and talks kept fresh and fascinating while being informed by the research of the wider group.

Members of the Research Group have also written a fascinating book on the life of Lord Bute which is available for purchase at the Walled Garden Entrance or via the Estate Office. A second book, which covers the history of Luton Hoo Estate to present day will be launched in 2023.  Both volumes were researched and written my members of our Volunteer Project.

Our Oral History Group aims to meet with people that have knowledge of life on the Estate, from the family members of former employees to today’s existing volunteers. These first-hand histories are recorded and collated by members of the team and join the work achieved by our Research Group to form a rich and diverse collection that covers an incredible breath of history and social archive.

The Research Group also provides essential cover to all open days in the form of guides, marshals and entrance kiosk meet and greet responsibilities.  These valuable team members are often the first point of contact for visitors to the Walled Garden and wider Estate for open and event days.

Members of the research teamwork all year around on our volunteer days and during the summer without their planning and delivery open days simply wouldn’t happen.

Would you enjoy working as part of a public facing team?  Are you intrigued by our research projects?  Would you like to train for your role at this vibrant Volunteer project?
